Castleton is mainly a long winding street of terraced houses and small friendly shops. with a cluster of cottages at the lower end.
It has two pubs, tea room, hair stylist, beauty salons, a small well stocked supermarket, holiday lets and B&Bs, making it a great stop over while exploring the moors.
In the past Castleton was the main market town for traders from all over the region and once boasted its own silk mill.
There is also believed to have been a castle there at one time, hence the name 'Castleton',
At the top (high) end of Castleton is 'Gallows Howe', which is where a gallows once stood!
The Esk valley railway that runs from Middlesbrough to Whitby stops at Castleton Moors Station, There is also a Moors Bus in the Summer months
